Discourse and Discussion - Research and Resources

Introduction

There is a lot of research on talk in the classroom, both how teachers talk to students and how students talk to each other. A lot of the articles on student talk focus on specific structures (Accountable Talk, Exploratory Talk, Quality Talk, Socratic Seminar, Structured Academic Controversy, etc.), though there are articles that talk about why function matters more than form.

Student engagement, better student learning, rigor, and inquiry/engagement are all cited as the reasons for implementing classroom discourse.
