Based on the structure and format of the science and engineering practices and math practice standards as well as the content of the C3 framework, we believe that teachers beginning to implement inquiry instruction in social studies should prioritize these student practices.
Build and apply knowledge across social studies disciplines
Students intentionally acquire and apply historical, geographic, civic, and economic knowledge to deepen their understanding of the world. |
Develop questions and plan inquiries
Students ask questions and plan for further learning by gathering sources.
| Engage with a variety of sources |
Students learn how to engage with diverse sources, including texts, images, maps, and data, to build knowledge, vocabulary, and comprehension in social studies.
| Analyze and evaluate sources |
Students use prior knowledge to critically examine sources, and assess context, credibility, and perspective.
| Communicate using evidence |
Students develop claims and communicate conclusions through writing, speaking, and other forms of expression.
| Take action |
Students use knowledge of history, civics, geography, and economics to examine the causes and consequences of events, decisions, and policies—both past and present- and then do something with that information.
