Positive Framing Feedback Sheet

Positive Framing

Skill Constructive Feedback (It was effective when... & Next time try...)
Live in the Now
  • Name what to do now instead of focusing on what went wrong
  • Give a clear and precise direction, telling students what to do
  • Tell students what should happen next
Assume the Best
  • Attribute the behavior or mistake to something well-intentioned (“It looks like a few people are confused…”
  • Redirect students using “reminders” (“Remember, right now we are…)
  • Use encouraging words when redirecting students (I know my room 2 can…)
Narrate the Positive
  • Actively notice and name good things going on periodically
  • Call out strong academic practices
  • Share reminders and ideas that can help other students
  • Also refer to positive narration criteria on the CC Feedback Sheet
Challenge
  • Challenge students with a specific goal (immediate or long term)
  • Invest students in the community with team challenges or class goals
  • Give the students an opportunity to compete as a group, against themselves, and/or against others groups, classes or sections.
  • Mention expectations for a higher grade level (“I bet you can do this like 5th graders”)
Talk Aspirations
  • Push students to the next level by naming how they are leveling up
  • Incorporate phrases or language about future goals
  • Talk about who your students are becoming or where they are headed
  • Discuss the bright future students will have
