Why use social media for your teaching practice?

  • Expand your professional learning network: Connect with educators across the globe to share ideas, get inspired, and stay informed about current trends in education.

Evaluating Social Media Groups and Individuals:

Before joining a group or following an individual, consider these factors:

  • Relevance: Does the content align with your teaching interests and goals?
  • Credibility: Is the information accurate, reliable, and supported by evidence?
  • Tone: Is the online environment positive, supportive, and respectful?
  • Privacy: Are there clear guidelines and expectations for privacy and confidentiality?

However, it's essential to be aware of the potential downsides:

  • Information overload and distractions.
  • Potential for negativity and online conflict.
  • Privacy concerns and the need for responsible use.
  • Risk of encountering unreliable or inaccurate information.
  • Cyberbullying and harassment.
  • Damage to professional reputation.
  • Exposure to inappropriate content.

Some suggestions for finding social media for teachers:

  • Look for Facebook groups: Get recommendations from colleagues and check things like, who runs the group, how many members, how current are the posts, will it be useful.
  • Online Forums: Reddit has some teaching focused areas, but always be cautious when exploring options like this (see above downsides).
  • Individuals: X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, and so many platforms offer ways to connect directly with individuals. Again exercise caution with this and ask yourself if the person if reliable, has expertise, and can offer a positive value to your teaching. Consider following researchers and thought leaders in the field.

By using social media thoughtfully and critically, you can harness its potential to enhance your teaching practice and connect with a vibrant community of educators.
