What are Print Concepts?

Print Concepts: the understanding that written language represents meaningful oral language and of the structure of books and of print

Book Parts

  • Pictures vs. words

Print Structure
  • Directionality: top-bottom, left-right, and the return sweep (navigating line to line) 
  • 1-1 correspondence (knowing there is 1 printed word for every 1 spoken word) 
  • Knowing words are made of letters
Alphabetic Knowledge
  • Recognition that certain shapes are letters 
  • Knowledge of letter names and order (i.e. singing the ABC song) 
  • Ability to identify specific letters regardless of context, shape, size, color or font
